Health Considerations

The Chihuahua is a generally healthy breed, with a life span averaging 12 to 18 years. Like all breeds, there are some health issues than can affect them, but many of these conditions can be tested for and a responsible breeder will conduct this testing prior to breeding their dogs.

The Canine Health Information Center/Orthopedic Foundation for Animals recommends the following tests for Chihuahuas; Cardiac evaluation, eye exam, patellar luxation evaluation. This is the bare minimum testing that you should expect to see a responsible breeder performing, and they should ideally be posting these results to the OFA website database.

Additional testing could include an evaluation of hips through OFA or PennHip, as well as genetic testing for these specific diseases; Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Chondrodystrophy, Degenerative Myelopathy, Lafora Disease, Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration, Spinocerebellar Ataxia.

Getting a dog from a breeder who conducts health testing is crucial for ensuring well-being of your future pet. Health testing helps identify potential genetic disorders, allowing breeders to make informed decisions and reduce the risk of passing on hereditary conditions. This not only contributes to the longevity and quality of life for your dog but also promotes responsible breeding practices within the community. Ultimately, choosing a health-tested dog can lead to a happier, healthier companion for years to come.
